Summary Job Statement:
The purpose of this position is to provide support to underwriter(s) in producing, servicing, and analyzing risks of new and renewal business. Must have strong verbal and written communication skills; strong decision-making skills and the ability to manage time & reprioritize effectively. A strong work ethic, good organizational skills, and the ability to work in a team environment is critical. Must have the ability to develop and maintain productive working relationships with peers, clients, carriers, and industry personnel.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in relevant course of study preferred.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 1-3 years of assistant underwriting or underwriting support experience
- Experience with transportation underwriting
- Demonstrated results in customer service and retaining a book of business
- Thorough understanding of transportation related insurance coverages
- Demonstrated ability to build solid relationships with clients (internally and externally)
- AINS, AU, CPCU CRM, CIC, or TRS designations preferred
- Positive interpersonal relations
- Strong verbal and written communication
- Ability to work as a team player
- Excellent decision-making ability and good judgement
- Ability to persuade others and persevere
- Strong computer skills
- Ability to operate within underwriting guidelines

Essential Functions:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Underwriting & Rating
- Rate renewals, endorsements and new business via carrier systems as instructed by the underwriter
- Prepare and issue renewal quotes according to underwriter’s instruction
- Review and verify that all information on new and renewal apps is complete and accurate
- Bind risks, post invoices and process technical data into ALIS as well as other online carrier formats
- Issue notices of cancellation, reinstatements and filings based upon established procedures
- Follow-up on quote and bind subjectivities and additional information as required on binder or to complete underwriting file for the carrier
- Handle all policy endorsements and correspondence as directed and within level of authority
- Issue policies per underwriter instructions and mail to agent
- Stay current and maintain task items in ALIS
- Demonstrate technical competence and the ability to read and understand coverage forms providing consistent and sound underwriting decisions
- Possess a high level of proficiency using multiple carrier rating systems, agency management systems, Microsoft Office Suite, and working in a paperless environment
- Ability to calculate policy premiums and quote within contracts of company authorizations, utilizing appropriate guidelines and rating systems
Market & Product Knowledge
- Clearly demonstrate specific knowledge of product lines, coverage, and state requirements
- Coordinate marketing efforts with your underwriter and the designated state marketing representatives to establish marketing initiatives for the state(s) for which you are responsible
- Build and maintain positive agency relationships via phone calls, emails, and agency visits
- Stay current and proficient in state and federal filing requirements
Communication & Team Participator
- Participate in meetings and training seminars as requested
- Work effectively with all levels, both internal and external and can easily build new relationships
- Work well independently as well as in a team environment
- Respond to agent requests and inquiries on a timely basis
- Identify customer needs and take appropriate action to meet those needs
- Coordinate workflows/workloads and communicate effectively with your lead underwriter regarding the prioritization of tasks

- Abide by the established customer service and file management guidelines and any other department procedures
- Operate within the established accounting procedures i.e., invoicing, cancellations, audits, etc.
